National Defense College Visits KEPHIS to Understand Mandate and Explore Areas of Mutual Cooperation

KEPHIS Headquarters, Nairobi – Nineteen members from the National Defense College(NDC) visited KEPHIS to understand the Corporation’s mandate and to seek areas of mutual cooperation. There were also members from Uganda and Tanzania in the entourage. KEPHIS introduced them to our mandates of seed certification, plant variety protection and analyses of agricultural inputs and produce through our globally accredited laboratories. KEPHIS elaborated on the issues of combating fake seed which greatly hinders food availability, as well as KEPHIS role in mitigating invasive weeds such as the dodder weed, the slimy yellowish plant found on fences. KEPHIS role at the border points was expounded, where the Corporation plays the role of ensuring that only plants that meet Kenya's conditions in the Plant Import Permit(PIP) are imported and well as facilitating trade.

The soldiers later visited the globally acclaimed analytical chemistry laboratory where they saw firsthand how analyses of plant produce destined for overseas countries is done and how a partnership with agencies such as the United States Agency for International Development(USAID) has enabled KEPHIS to acquire state of the art equipment to ensure that only produce that meets external markets is exported. Laboratory analysts also expounded on the importance of testing soil, water, irrigation water, manures, fertilizers and other agro-inputs for effective and efficient agri-business.
